Quote:
Modern Banking focuses on the theory and practice of banking, and its prospects in the new millennium. The book is written for courses in banking and finance at Masters/MBA level, or undergraduate degrees specialising in this area. Bank practitioners wishing to deepen and broaden their understanding of banking issues may also be attracted to this book. While they often have exceptional and detailed knowledge of the areas they have worked in, busy bankers may be all too unaware of the key broader issues. Consider the fundamental questions: What is unique about a bank? and What differentiates it from other financial institutions? Answering these questions begins to show how banks should evolve and adapt - or fail. If bankers know the underlying reasons for why profitable banks exist, it will help them to devise strategies for sustained growth.

Modern Banking concludes with a set of case studies that give practical insight into the key issues covered in the book:

With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death. But which is which?

Book 4 - Breaking Dawn (2008)

International Poisonous Plants Checklist: An Evidence-Based Reference

International Poisonous Plants Checklist: An Evidence-Based Reference Free Download

D. Jesse Wagstaff “International Poisonous Plants Checklist: An Evidence-Based Reference"

CRC | 2008-07-07 | ISBN: 1420062522 | 464 pages | PDF | 5,6 Mb

Knowledge of plant toxicity has always been important, but the information has not always been reliable. Now, increasing international trade is drawing attention to the inadequacy of regional information and highlighting the geographical fragmentation and notorious discrepancies of thinly documented information. The international community of safety regulators, toxicologists, and poison control personnel requires a single reference compiled of verifiable, primary source reports of common poisonous plants.

Intended for just that purpose, International Poisonous Plant Checklist: An Evidence-Based Reference successfully addresses the deficiencies and gaps in the current literature. Using accepted botanic names, the book defines the known set of toxic vascular plants. The use of botanic names satisfies the need for an international standard of identity to support worldwide communication and commerce. Also, taxonomy based on common ancestry and genetic connections provides a rational basis for studying and using plant relationships.

The author supports toxicity information with references to the primary literature. Each entry includes referenced citations supporting the toxicity of the plant, symptoms and circumstances of toxic exposure, dosage and potency, chemical analysis, botany, pharmacology, mechanism and metabolism, and control.

Finally, the book cross-references selected synonyms and common names. The checklist is organized alphabetically with two types of entries. The main entry documents the toxic plants themselves and a secondary entry lists selected synonyms and common names cross-referenced to the main entries.

Including virtually all common animal feed plants, human food plants, and many plants that are sources of herbal products and dietary supplements, tonics, and therapeutic agents, this timely checklist compiles and verifies the known data on toxic vascular plants from around the world.

Encyclopedia of Women and Sports Free Download

Victoria Sherrow “Encyclopedia of Women and Sports "

ABC-Clio Inc | 1996-12 | ISBN: 087436826X | 382 pages | PDF | 1 Mb

Editorial Review

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up--Women and Sports opens with an introductory essay that traces female involvement in sports through the ages, beginning with ancient Greece and ending with current trends. The alphabetically organized entries cover athletes, sports, organizations, and social issues (discrimination, pregnancy, steroid use, and eating disorders). The women profiled are all American-born or naturalized citizens. The poorly reproduced black-and-white photographs are dark and difficult to make out; they add little to the text. Women and the Military contains a well-thought-out, alphabetical listing of women, places, organizations (U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the Minerva Center), social and legal issues (pregnancy, hazing, Public Law 90-130), terminology ("mop commando"), and battles. An introductory essay delineates women's roles in warfare, beginning with ancient times and then focusing on the American military. Black-and-white photos extend the text. The entries in both titles have see-also references and bibliographic citations consisting of books and magazine articles. Both volumes are well organized and clearly written and would make sound purchases for collections looking for information on women's history.

Bruce Houghton, Hazel Rymer, Steve McNutt, Haraldur Sigurdsson “Encyclopedia of Volcanoes"

Academic Press | 1999-10-15 | ISBN: 012643140X | 1456 pages | PDF | 33 Mb

Volcanoes are unquestionably one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring features of the physical world. Our paradoxical fascination with them stems from their majestic beauty and powerful, if sometimes deadly, destructiveness.

Notwithstanding the tremendous advances in volcanology since ancient times, some of the mystery surrounding volcanic eruptions remains today. The Encyclopedia of Volcanoes summarizes our present knowledge of volcanoes. Through its thematic organization around the melting of the earth, it provides a comprehensive source of information on the multidisciplinary influences of volcanic eruptions--both the destructive as well as the beneficial aspects.

The majority of the chapters focus on the geoscience-related aspects of volcanism (radioactive heat source, melting rock, ascent of magma, surface phenomena associated with exiting magma, extraterrestrial volcanism, etc.). In addition, complementary chapters discuss the multidisciplinary aspects of volcanism; these include the history of volcanology, geothermal energy resources, interaction with the oceans and atmosphere, health aspects of volcanism, mitigation of volcanic disasters, post-eruption ecology, and the impact of eruptions on organismal biodiversity.

In addition to its appeal to educators, students, and professional and amateur scientists, the Encyclopedia of Volcanoes functions as an important information resource for administrators and officials responsible for developing and implementing volcanic hazard mitigation around the world.

Editorial Review

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up–Writers "from Christopher Marlowe to John Donne" and of numerous genres are covered: dramatists, novelists, nonfiction authors, poets, historians, publishers, translators, literary critics, and editors. The alphabetical entries are brief–typically a half page to two pages long. Those on individuals contain biographical information, works, and a short bibliography. Some brief examples of writings are given, and a number offer critical analyses. Occasional entries consider schools of writing. The set includes the obvious (Thomas More, John Dryden, Oliver Goldsmith, Jonathan Swift, John Milton), as well as a number of lesser-known and obscure authors. Readers may be surprised to find entries on Leonardo da Vinci and Elizabeth I. According to the preface, the editors included a "wide array of writers…for their contributions to and impact on world culture." Libraries with limited budgets may not need such a comprehensive work, but where patrons do extensive research on these periods, these encyclopedias will prove useful.

Editorial Review

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-9–Like its companion, the e.encyclopedia (DK, 2003),this title is a product of thepartnership between the publisher and Google. It contains eight topical sections from "Matter and Materials" to "Animals" to the "Human Body." Within these sections, visually attractive spreads introduce such topics as "Atoms" and the "Periodic Table" with a paragraph of text and detailed captions. For extended inquiries or more detail on these subjects, readers are directed to a content-safe site; a keyword suggestion is flagged by an icon on the spread. A search for astronauts results in plenty of NASA and ESA pages, complete with history, pictures, and current news, while photosynthesis provides a meager two links geared to younger students. The plentiful and exciting illustrations are a main selling point; they move the eye along, offering a smorgasbord of information. Students in search of a topic to investigate will find this a useful reference in that it encourages browsing. It is also likely to be a great tool for students who prefer the Internet over a book.

Editorial Review

From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up—The 800-plus entries in this well-rounded volume cover the period from 1792 to 1815 and describe Napoleon's and France's lasting impact on the world. They range from expected topics like "Infantry"; "Madrid Uprising"; "Nelson, Horatio, First Viscount"; and "Quadruple Alliance" to material on authors, artists, composers, places, "Education (French)," "Luddites," "Neoclassicism," and "Slave Trade." The books include black-and-white maps and illustrations, glossaries of military and naval terms, 10 essays that summarize the entire period, and 18 primary-source documents. The set is well organized and easy to use; tables of contents and indexes appear in each volume, and each signed entry includes extensive see-also references and suggestions for further reading. A 44-page bibliography, unfortunately not divided by topic, completes the set. A number of dates in the chronology contradict those in the main text. For example, the chronology states that the siege of Pamplona began on June 30, 1813, whereas the entry says it began on June 25th of the same year. Still, this will be a valuable addition to the European history collections in large public libraries.

Editorial Review

From Booklist

Appropriate for a high-school and general audience, this addition to the publisher's History of Science series describes scientific concepts in ancient societies, including the Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, and Roman worlds until the fall of the Roman Empire. Most of the entries are about people, concepts, and locales of the Greco-Roman world. Arrangement is alphabetical, supported by good cross-references and indexing. Examples of the more than 140 entries include Agriculture, Epicureanism, Euclid, Mesopotamia, Meteorology, Roman roads and bridges, Vesuvius, and Women and science.

Entries vary in length from around half of a page to more than five pages for Aristotle, Geography/Geodesy, and Psychology. The lists of references attached to each entry includes both secondary sources and translations of primary sources. Some entries have black-and-white illustrations. The dictionary portion of the volume is followed by a chronology listing significant historical events along with the births of important individuals in the sciences and a bibliography divided into primary and secondary sources.

Eric Swedin “Science in the Contemporary World: An Encyclopedia"

ABC-CLIO | 2005-03-08 | ISBN: 1851095241 | 382 pages | PDF | 2,5 Mb

Editorial Review

From Booklist

This title is part of ABC-CLIO's successful History of Science series. Other titles include Science in the Ancient World: An Encyclopedia (2004), Science in the Early Twentieth Century: An Encyclopedia (2005). Science in the Enlightenment: An Encyclopedia (2003), and The Scientific Revolution: An Encyclopedia (2001). The title under review covers developments in the scientific disciplines from the end of World War II to the present day.

Entries cover scientific concepts, leaders, institutions, and disciplines. The reading level is appropriate for high-school, undergraduate, and general adult readers. Each entry has a narrative text, photos or other illustrations, and a brief bibliography; those looking for more advanced or detailed explanations, especially of scientific concepts, will need to look elsewhere. See also references are included at the end of the entries. The bibliographies are short, many with only one or two items, usually books. Some Web sites are included. The photos endeavor to capture the scientists at their work or present a lively portrait. A chronology, selected general bibliography, and subject index appear at the end of each volume.

Since the emphasis is on science history, those looking for more detailed explanations of scientific theories and concepts will need to turn to more general titles, such as the classic scientific reference source, McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology (9th ed., 2002). Information on many of the same topics discussed in the ABC-CLIO title can be found in The Oxford Companion to the History of Modern Science (2003), but readers may choose the former for its approachable writing and attractive layout. It makes a make good introductory text to the history of science in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries and is recommended for public and academic libraries.

Fluid Mechanics: An Introduction to the Theory of Fluid Flows

Fluid Mechanics: An Introduction to the Theory of Fluid Flows Free Download

Fluid Mechanics: An Introduction to the Theory of Fluid Flows
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 724 | 2008-10 | ISBN: 3540713425 | PDF | 12 MB

Product Description:

Fluid mechanics is a field that spreads widely and to all fields of engineering, science and medicine. The book takes this into account and provides a sound basis.

This is a modern book on fluid mechanics that is written in a way needed these days to teach the subject to students in engineering and science at higher educational institutes. The book is well structured for this purpose and is arranged in a logical teaching sequence of chapters. It is starting with an introductory chapter that contains also the summary of the history of fluid mechanics. In two chapters the basic knowledge in mathematics and physics is summarized to provide the background information needed by the students to enter the fluid mechanics. Kinematics of fluid motion is briefly described followed by the complete derivations of the differential form of the continuity and momentum equations, as well as the mechanical and thermal form of the energy equation. Subjects like hydrostatics, similarity theory, potential flows, gas dynamics etc. are treated in an introductory way to lead the students into fluid mechanics. The t_ij terms are introduced to describe the molecular momentum transport and their complete derivation is given by looking at the basis of molecular motions like that in an ideal gas. Subjects like one-dimensional viscous flows, stationary and in stationary, are treated to give the students an introduction into laminar flows. Wave motions in fluids, low Reynolds number flows, high Reynolds number flows and flows with heat transfer are treated to permit the students to get introductory treatments of important parts of fluid mechanics. Introductions are also provided into numerical computations of flows, into turbulence, as well as into measuring techniques as applied in fluid mechanics. In this way, the entire theory and practise of fluid mechanics is treated in the book, providing the student with information needed for more advanced books in specialized subjects of fluid flow treatments.

Advancements of fluid flow measuring techniques and of computational methods have led to new ways to treat laminar and turbulent flows. These methods are extensively used these days in research and engineering practise. This also requires new ways to teach the subject to students at higher educational institutions in an introductory manner. The book provides the knowledge to students in engineering and natural science they need to enter fluid mechanics applications in various fields. Analytical treatments are provided based on the Navier-Stokes equations. Introductions are also given into numerical and experimental methods applied to flows.

The main benefit the reader will derive from the book is a sound introduction into fluid mechanics with introductions into subfields that are of interest to engineering and science.
