The alphabetically organized entries cover athletes, sports, organizations, and social issues (discrimination, pregnancy, steroid use, and eating disorders). The women profiled are all American-born or naturalized citizens. The poorly reproduced black-and-white photographs are dark and difficult to make out; they add little to the text. Women and the Military contains a well-thought-out, alphabetical listing of women, places, organizations (U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the Minerva Center), social and legal issues (pregnancy, hazing, Public Law 90-130), terminology ("mop commando"), and battles. An introductory essay delineates women's roles in warfare, beginning with ancient times and then focusing on the American military. Black-and-white photos extend the text. The entries in both titles have see-also references and bibliographic citations consisting of books and magazine articles. Both volumes are well organized and clearly written and would make sound purchases for collections looking for information on women's history.

Grade 10 Up—The 800-plus entries in this well-rounded volume cover the period from 1792 to 1815 and describe Napoleon's and France's lasting impact on the world. They range from expected topics like "Infantry"; "Madrid Uprising"; "Nelson, Horatio, First Viscount"; and "Quadruple Alliance" to material on authors, artists, composers, places, "Education (French)," "Luddites," "Neoclassicism," and "Slave Trade." The books include black-and-white maps and illustrations, glossaries of military and naval terms, 10 essays that summarize the entire period, and 18 primary-source documents. The set is well organized and easy to use; tables of contents and indexes appear in each volume, and each signed entry includes extensive see-also references and suggestions for further reading. A 44-page bibliography, unfortunately not divided by topic, completes the set. A number of dates in the chronology contradict those in the main text. For example, the chronology states that the siege of Pamplona began on June 30, 1813, whereas the entry says it began on June 25th of the same year. Still, this will be a valuable addition to the European history collections in large public libraries.

The t_ij terms are introduced to describe the molecular momentum transport and their complete derivation is given by looking at the basis of molecular motions like that in an ideal gas. Subjects like one-dimensional viscous flows, stationary and in stationary, are treated to give the students an introduction into laminar flows. Wave motions in fluids, low Reynolds number flows, high Reynolds number flows and flows with heat transfer are treated to permit the students to get introductory treatments of important parts of fluid mechanics. Introductions are also provided into numerical computations of flows, into turbulence, as well as into measuring techniques as applied in fluid mechanics. In this way, the entire theory and practise of fluid mechanics is treated in the book, providing the student with information needed for more advanced books in specialized subjects of fluid flow treatments.

Advancements of fluid flow measuring techniques and of computational methods have led to new ways to treat laminar and turbulent flows. These methods are extensively used these days in research and engineering practise. This also requires new ways to teach the subject to students at higher educational institutions in an introductory manner. The book provides the knowledge to students in engineering and natural science they need to enter fluid mechanics applications in various fields. Analytical treatments are provided based on the Navier-Stokes equations. Introductions are also given into numerical and experimental methods applied to flows.

The main benefit the reader will derive from the book is a sound introduction into fluid mechanics with introductions into subfields that are of interest to engineering and science.

Acton deals with a commonsense approach to numerical algorithms for the solution of equations: algebraic, transcendental, and differential. He assumes that a computer is available for performing the bulk of the arithmetic. The book is divided into two parts, either of which could form the basis of a one-semester course in numerical methods. Part I discusses most of the standard techniques: roots of transcendental equations, roots of polynomials, eigenvalues of symmetric matrices, and so on. Part II cuts across the basic tools, stressing such commonplace problems as extrapolation, removal of singularities, and loss of significant figures. The book is written with clarity and precision, intended for practical rather than theoretical use. This book will interest mathematicians, both pure and applied, as well as any scientist or engineer working with numerical problems.

I love lore books, because they distill the wisdom of a leading practitioner of a field into something I can absorb without having to make all the same mistakes myself.

Numerical Methods that Work is a wonderfully candid and good-humoured lore book that I keep coming back to. Besides helping me stay out of trouble, it's such a fun read that I sometimes pull it down from the shelf to read like a novel.

This isn't really a numerical analysis textbook per se--you won't learn how to code the conjugate gradient method, or analyze a SVD routine for roundoff sensitivity, but reading it and making its attitude your own will make your programs better and (if you're like me) save you from lots of painful blunders.

I am an engineer and years ago I needed some crash training on numerical methods. A former teacher of mine recommended this book for self-study. It is an excellent starter book for someone who wants a gentle introduction to numerical methods.

Forman Acton lucidly describes basic numerical methods. The only topic not covered in this book is the solution of systems of linear equations, although to some extent this is treated in the sections on PDEs and eigensystems. Generally speaking, he covers the concepts behind the algorithms before introducing the algorithms themselves, and does not confuse the reader with sophisticated derivations. In the acknowledgements to the first edition of Numerical Recipes in Fortran, Wm. Press et al write "We also wish to ackowledge two individuals we have never met: Forman Acton, whose 1970 textbook Numerical Methods That Work has surely left its stylistic mark on us...." (The second being Donald Knuth) In Real Computing, Acton expands in greater detail upon the theme of the earlier work, which is that good computing routines are problem-specific. That insight and understanding are called-for; recipes and black box routines are insufficient. In the fifties, with powerful mainframes few and far between, engineers farmed out their computations to a computing center. There you could find the guys who knew intelligent machine computing. When the IBM 370 came along, every university had its own machine, and computations became in-house. The expertise you found in the old centers wasn't there. Acton worked in one of those centers, and this book is written to guide the reader in acquiring some of the old magic.

As well as upgrading aircraft, the RAF is buying a new range of offensive weapons, which combine pinpoint accuracy with a very high survivability rate. One such weapon is Storm Shadow, which was highly successful during the recent hostilities in Iraq. As well as providing improved operational capability, these precision weapons will reduce greatly the risk of collateral damage and civilian casualties.

Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22 Raptor is a fighter aircraft that uses stealth technology. It is primarily an air superiority fighter, but has multiple capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles. Introduction

In its narrowest sense, a synonym is a word or phrase that is perfectly substitutable in a context for another word or phrase. People who study language professionally agree that there is no such thing as an ideal synonym, for it is virtually impossible to find two words or phrases that are identical in denotation (meaning), connotation, frequency,familiarity, and appropriateness. Indeed, linguists have long noted the economy of language, which suggests that no language permits a perfect fit, in all respects, between any two words or phrases. Many examples of overlapping can be cited; the more obvious ones in English are those that reflect a duplication arising from Germanic and Romance sources, like motherly and maternal, farming and agriculture, teach and instruct. In such pairs the native English form is often the one with an earthier, warmer connotation. In some instances, where a new coinage or a loanword has been adopted inadvertently duplicating an existing term, creating 'true' synonyms, the two will quickly diverge, not necessarily in meaning but in usage, application, connotation, level, or all of these. For example, scientists some years ago expressed dissatisfaction with the term tidal wave, for the phenomenon was not caused by tides but, usually, by submarine seismic activity. The word tsunami was borrowed from Japanese in an attempt to describe the phenomenon more accurately, but it was later pointed out the tsunami means 'tidal wave' in Japanese. Today, the terms exist side by side in English, the older expression still in common use, the newer more frequent in the scientific and technical literature. Any synonym book must be seen as a compromise that relies on the sensitivity of its users to the idiomatic nuances of the language. In its best applications, it serves to remind users of words, similar in meaning, that might not spring readily to mind, and to offer lists of words and phrases that are alternatives to and compromises for those that might otherwise be overused and therefore redundant, repetitious, and boring. The Oxford Thesaurus goes a step further by offering example sentences to illustrate the uses of the headwords and their alternatives in natural, idiomatic contexts.

The 16 hour DVD starts off explaining what UV's are and how Bodypaint works. Next is a 64 minute Fun with Bodypaint abstract tutorial that introducs many of the basic tools and commands within Bodypaint. Following on are more in depth tutorials and explanations of virtually every tool and command with the program. Several mini UV mapping projects follow. All throughout the videos, 3DKiwi troubleshoots common problems.
